" Game of Thrones " ( Engl. The Game of Thrones ) - American television series in the genre of fantasy , based on a cycle of novels " A Song of Ice and Fire " by George RR Martin . Filmed under the supervision of David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for the HBO cable channel . Filming was conducted in several countries, including the United Kingdom ( Northern Ireland ), Malta , Croatia , Iceland and Morocco . The first season premiered in the USA on April 17, 2011., the last episode of the final season was shown on May 19, 2019 [3] [4] .
The action of the Game of Thrones takes place in a fictional world reminiscent of medieval Europe . In the series, many characters act simultaneously and several storylines develop . There are three main plot arches : the first is devoted to the struggle of several influential houses for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms or for independence from it; the second - to the descendant of the overthrown dynasty of rulers, the exiled princess who plans to return to the throne; the third - to the ancient brotherhood, protecting the state from threats from the north.
The series is characterized by the absence of strictly positive characters, many heroes commit ambiguous acts and may die on the screen unexpectedly for the viewer [5] . In the series there are fantastic creatures - dragons and undead . Especially for the series, artificial languages were developed : Dothraki , high Valyrian and several of its dialects.
The television series received high reviews from the viewers, becoming one of the largest budget projects on modern American television and the most expensive in the fantasy genre, despite the fact that many critics considered the amount of profanity, naturalistic murder scenes, erotic scenes and sexual hints excessive. Around the Game of Thrones an extensive fan community has sprung up . The series has been awarded many prestigious awards, including 38 prime time Emmy awards in various nominations, three Hugo awards for best performance , and Peabody Prizes . Peter Dinklidge , who performed the role of Tyrion Lannister , four times awardedEmmy Award for Best Supporting Actor and Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor .
The plot is based on a series of novels by George Martin " Song of Ice and Fire ." Each book of heptalogy - of the seven planned seven books published at the beginning of 2019 - corresponds to one season, but the third novel, “The Storm of Swords”, is divided into 2 seasons, the third and fourth [6] . The fourth and fifth novels - “ Feast of the Vultures ” and “ Dance with the Dragons ” - are the basis of the fifth season. The sixth novel - “ Winds of Winter ” - is divided into 2 seasons, the sixth and seventh [7] [8] . The final seventh novel - " Dreams of Spring " - is also divided into 2 seasons, the seventh and eighth [9] [10][11] . The novel "The Winds of Winter" is not complete and may be published in 2020 [12] [13] [14] . Dreams of Spring will be released a few years after the release of The Wind of Winter [15] [16] [17] .
The first season is an exact adaptation of the first novel of the series. Starting from the second season, differences from books appear, and from the fifth season the storylines of the series differ significantly from the books [18] [19] [20] . According to David Benioff, “the main task is to adapt the book series as a whole, to stick to the map set by George, to reflect the main milestones, but not necessarily every stopover. This is adaptation, she will have to adapt in order to survive. There will always be those who want everything to remain exactly as in books. For us, this is not an option initially ” [21] .
The action takes place against the backdrop of political intrigues and, later, the civil war in the struggle for power over the political formation of the Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros.
Former Stormlands ruler Robert Baratheon, usurper king of the Seven Kingdoms, asks his old friend, North keeper Eddard "Ned" Stark, to become his new right hand - the chief adviser. Ned Stark confronts Robert's wife, Queen Cersei , and her father, Western keeper Tywin Lannister. During the first season, the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters escalates, and after the death of Robert on the hunt and the accession to the throne, the son of Cersei, Prince Joffrey, Lord Eddard is arrested and executed, and an internecine war of the Five Kings breaks out in the state.
John Snow , considered the illegitimate son of Eddard Stark, enters the service of the Brotherhood Night Watch, guarding the titanic ice Wall in the far north of the Seven Kingdoms. The watch and the whole of Westeros are in a mysterious danger - the half-hiding White Walkers, who live in the lands beyond the Wall and command the army of the dead.
In the east, in Pentos, on the territory of the Essos continent, Princess Daenerys Targaryen , a descendant of the house that ruled in the Seven Kingdoms and was destroyed by Robert Baratheon, is forced to marry Khala Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki nomads. After the death of Drogo, Daenerys becomes the mother of three little dragons, the only ones in the world.
Although the iron throne of the Seven Kingdoms is occupied by Joffrey Baratheon, the brothers of the late Robert - Renly and Stannis Baratheon - independently declare themselves kings and enter the war with each other and other contenders. Robb Stark , Eddard's eldest son, proclaimed King of the North, continues the war with Tywin Lannister, and Tywin’s son, the dwarf Tirion , briefly becomes the de facto head of state as his right hand. Stannis, having killed Renly with black magic and captured his army, is trying to capture the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, but thanks to the cunning of Tyrion and the Lannister’s alliance with the powerful Tyrell house, he is defeated in the battle of the Chernovodnaya River.
Far in the North, the small army of the Night Watch, led by its leader Jior Mormont, appears in the snowy lands beyond the Wall, encountering hostile savages - wild, who call themselves free people and have long fought with the black brothers and lords of the North.
In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, having overcome the Red Desert, visits the rich trading city of Kvart and plunges into a web of intrigue; the Quartiles take possession of her dragons, but Daenerys manages to bring them back.
King Joffrey is getting ready for a wedding with Margaery Tyrell, and Tyrion is forcibly married to Sansa Stark , the eldest daughter of Lord Eddard. After the defeat, Stannis Baratheon retires to the Dragon Stone, but regains confidence thanks to the priestess Melisandra and the experienced smuggler Davos Sivort . Robb Stark breaks the promise to marry one of Walder Frey's daughters, for which he, along with his mother and wife, are treacherously killed in the Gemini Castle in the River Lands.
In the lands in the north, John Snow is forced to join the feral led by their leader, Mans the Raider, and sets off on a sortie; at a difficult moment, he remains faithful to the gods and the Watch.
In the east, Daenerys Targaryen visits the cities of the Slave Traders Bay and ends up at the head of an army of freed slaves and hired slave warriors of the Impeccable.
Sansa is selected from King's Landing thanks to Petir Bailish , a former member of the Small Council . Tyrion is blamed for poisoning King Joffrey. Jaime helps Tyrion escape.
Daenerys subjugates the main of the cities of the Slave Traders Bay - Mierin, but then the events begin to take shape completely not as she expected. Theon Greyjoy , broken by the torture of the bastard of Lord Rousse Bolton Ramsey Snow, finally turns into the servant of his tormentor - Smelly, and Bran meets the most amazing creatures of all that have ever existed in Westeros.
The season is centered on the Kingdom of Dorn and the daughters of Prince Oberin Martell, nicknamed the Sand Snakes. Daenerys is facing a threat inside Mierin. John Snow confronts the horrors of Torment. Arya chooses the path of service to the Many-Faced God of Death. Authorities in King's Landing actually go to the religious fanatics “sparrows,” and the alliance of the Lannisters and Tyrells is cracking.
Beylon Greyjoy's younger brother, the pirate Euron nicknamed the Raven Eye, who intends to conquer Westeros, returns to the Iron Islands from exile. Daenerys Targaryen returns to the capital of the Dothraki. Sansa finds support in the North against the Boltons. Cersei and Jaime unite against the Sparrows. Bran Stark learns visions from the Three-Eyed Raven. Westeros is threatened by the invasion of the Others, and John Snow returns from the world of the dead.
Cersei is trying to rule Westeros, despite the fact that she has no allies. In the Riverlands, the battle for Riverran begins after the death of the Lord of the Twins, Walder Frey, and the storylines of Brienne Tarte , Sandor Cleagan and the Brotherhood Without Banners continue . Theon and Yara Greyjoy together with Daenerys Targaryen are going to destroy Euron Greyjoy. Olenna Tyrell, having entered into an alliance with Ellaria Sand, Varis and Daenerys Targaryen, intends to take revenge on Cersei Lannister, who destroyed her family. John Snow, being king of the North, prepares for battle with the Others. Samwell Tarleyin the Old Town Citadel, is being trained to become a master. After Daenerys defeated the Sons of the Harpy in the Bay of Slave Traders, Daario Naharis rules Mierin, Tyrion Lannister goes to Westeros with Daenerys, Varis, Theon and Yara Greyjoy, and Ser Jorah Mormont is trying to recover from the gray ailment with the help of Samwell.
Daenerys Targaryen arrives with his army and dragons in Winterfell for a decisive battle with the White Walkers, while Cersei Lannister, with the help of the Iron Fleet, Euron Greyjoy, receives help from the mercenaries to destroy his enemies. In the North, there is a battle between the living and the dead, in which the living are defeated with the help of Arya Stark, who kills the King of the Night. An army of Daenerys is advancing on King's Landing to destroy Cersei Lannister. After Cersei Lannister died under the rubble of the castle, John Snow kills Daenerys Targaryen, and then goes to live behind the wall with the wild.
Like the original source, “Game of Thrones” has a large number of characters. According to David Benioff, the series has the largest cast on modern television [22] . According to data released by HBO in November 2012, a total of 257 actors were recruited only for the filming of the third season [23] , mainly for minor roles that do not require large screen time.
A key role in the series is played by the Stark family. The noble Lord of Winterfell Eddard Stark ( Sean Bean ) is the Guardian of the North, one of the Seven Kingdoms. Cersei has an incestuous relationship with his twin brother, Royal Guard Knight Jaime Lannister ( Nikolai Coster-Waldau ); all her three children are from him. In the Lannister family, there is another son - the dwarf Tirion ( Peter Dinklidge ), who gets himself a lover Shayu ( Sibel Kekilli ) and takes on the service of a rude mercenary Bronn ( Jerome Flynn) King Robert's heir is the son of Cersei, the selfish and cruel prince Joffrey Baratheon ( Jack Gleason ), who is accompanied everywhere by bodyguard Sandor Clegane, nicknamed the Dog ( Rory McCann ). One of the pretenders to the throne after Robert's death is his brother, the stern Dragon Dragon lord Stannis Baratheon ( Stephen Dillane ). At the service of Stannis are former smuggler Davos Seaworth ( Liam Cunningham ) and the red priestess Melisandra ( Caris van Houten ), who preaches faith in the Lord of the Light. Renly Stormlands Lord ( Gethin Anthony ), the youngest of the Baratheon brothers, is also trying to take the Iron Throne. He marries the representative of the Tyrell house - Margery ( Natalie Dormer ) and takes on the service the warrior Brienne Tartt ( Gwendoline Christie ) dreaming of a knightly rank . Theon Greyjoy is captured by the brutal bastard Ramsey Snow ( Ivan Reon) After the war, the Dorian prince Oberin Martell ( Pedro Pascal ) [24] with his mistress Elaria Sand ( Indira Varma ) [25] arrives at the Purple Wedding of Joffrey Baratheon and the widowed Margery Tyrell . In the North, the feral go to war on the Wall under the command of King-for-the-Wall Mans the Raider ( Kiaran Hinds ) and his associates, Tormund ( Christopher Heavier ) and the tenor magnan Stir ( Yuri Kolokolnikov ). The first proposal for the sale of film rights George Martin received 1-2 months after the release of the first novel of the series, " Game of Thrones " [26] ; suggestions continued to come as new books and their popularity grew. The commercial success of the film adaptations in the fantasy genre , especially the film “ The Lord of the Rings ” by Peter Jackson, also played its role [27] . Nevertheless, the writer for a long time was rather skeptical about the possible screen version of his works, considering them too long for film adaptation and too different from the standards of the television series [28] ; Martin Martin’s experience as a screenwriter and producer in the 1980s and 1990s contributed to this attitude [29].
In January 2007, the HBO cable channel acquired the rights to the screen version of the series [30] . The first and second draft scenarios of the pilot episode were presented in August 2007 [31] and in June 2008, respectively [32] and were approved by HBO [33] [34] . In September 2008, HBO secured the rights to the series, but the project was given the green light only in November [35] [36] . Almost immediately, a pilot synopsis appeared on the network, followed by the full script [37] .
The scriptwriters and executive producers of the project, in addition to Martin himself, were David Benioff and D. B. Weiss . It was assumed that they will be screenwriters of all episodes, except for one in each season, the script of which is written by Martin himself [30] [38] . However, in the future, Jane Aspenson and Brian Cogman joined the scriptwriting team , writing one script for the first season [39] .

David Benioff described the Game of Thrones as the “ Soprano Clan in Middle-earth, ” emphasizing the general dark atmosphere of the series and the intricacies of complex intrigues, in which the fantasy element is more of an addition [41] . Michael Lombardo, spokesman for HBO, believes the story itself is more attractive than magic or an exotic setting.
On May 5, 2009, it was announced that Peter Dinklidge had signed a contract for the role of Tyrion Lannister in the pilot series [42] . After some time, unknown persons edited the profile of actress Holly Marie Combs on the IMDB website , “nominating” her for the role of Katilyn Stark ; Benioff and Weiss stated that it was a hoax [43] . In early August 2009, it was officially announced that the role of Katilin went to Jennifer El [44] .
At the end of July 2009, many names of actors invited to participate in the series were announced, including Sean Bean (Eddard Stark) [45] , Keith Harington (John Snow), Jack Gleason (Joffrey Baratheon), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen) and Mark Eddie (Robert Baratheon) [45] [46] . On August 20, it was additionally announced that Nikolai Koster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Emilia Clark (Daenerys Targaryen), Richard Madden (Robb Stark), Ian Glen (Jorah Mormont), Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy),Macy Williams (Arya Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) [47] . On September 1, information appeared that Lina Headey would play Cersei Lannister [48] . On September 23, Martin confirmed that Rory McCann would play Sandor Cleagan [49] . October 11, it was confirmed that Jason Momoa plays Khal Drogo, and three days later - that Isaac Hempstead-Wright play Bran Stark [50] .
Filming the pilot episode took almost a month, from October 24 [51] to November 19, 2009 [52] . Shortly after the filming was over, it became known that actress Jennifer El (Katileen Stark) will be replaced by Michelle Fairley , and Tamzin Merchant (Daenerys Targaryen) will be replaced by Emilia Clark. It took several scenes to be re-shot, including the prologue, and due to overlays in the schedule, not all actors were able to return to the shoot, which entailed the replacement of three more actors. Director Thomas McCarthy was also unable to return to re-filming and was replaced, his name is not mentioned in the credits.
On March 2, 2010, HBO confirmed that the first season would be removed. On July 26, 2010 [53] in Northern Ireland, filming of 9 episodes began, which ended in mid-December (15th or 16th according to various sources) [54] [55] . In June 2012, shots of 10 episodes appeared on the Internet, in which one of the severed heads resembles George W. Bush . HBO reacted to the scandal with an apology, announcing that the scene with severed heads would be edited when released on DVD. As explained by David Benioff, the creators simply used artificial heads that they could get [56] [57] [58] .
David Benioff and D. B. Weiss from the very beginning intended to film the entire series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” if HBO would give them such an opportunity. According to their calculations, the material of the books is enough to create a series of 80 watch episodes, or eight 10-episode seasons [59] . Benioff and Weiss emphasized that they did not intend to postpone the last seasons for several years until George R. R. Martin finished the last books. At the beginning of 2018, out of the planned seven novels, only five were published, and work on the latter, “Dance with the Dragons," took six years. The writer told Benioff and Weiss the planned plots of unfinished books and the intended ending, including in case he dies before he can finish the series [60]. The producers admit, although they consider it undesirable, that the television series will end before the last book is published [61] .
In March 2015, Benioff and Weiss stated that the fifth season is based on the latest published books of the cycle, so starting from the sixth season there will be serious differences from the planned books in the series, however, the endings of the storylines will be approximately the same [62] . In August of the same year, George R. R. Martin stated that, most likely, he would no longer write a single script for the Game of Thrones, as he needed to focus on completing the cycle [63] .
On March 13, 2014, information appeared that Benioff and Weiss know the fate of almost all the characters and plan to complete the series with the seventh season [64] [65] , but in July 2015, executive producer Michael Lombardo announced that the series would end with the eighth season [66] [67] . In a January 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lombardo announced that HBO would extend the series to the seventh and eighth seasons, while the last season would not be expanded to 12 or 13 episodes (as George Martin originally believed, since the third, fifth, sixth and seventh books on more than the rest) [68] or is divided into two parts, like the “ Soprano Clan ” or the AMC series “Breaking Bad ”and“ Mad Men ” [69] .
On May 26, 2019, the premiere of a two-hour documentary on how the final season of Game of Thrones was created [70] will take place .
Two days after the premiere of the first season , on April 19, 2011, it was announced that the series would be extended to the second season [71] . Casting began in May 2011 [72] . The broadcast of the season in the United States began on April 1, 2012 [73] .
April 11, 2012 from the personal blog of George Martin, it became known about the extension of the series for the third season [74] . The premiere was scheduled for March 31, 2013 [75] .
On April 2, 2013, the series was extended for the fourth season [76] . The premiere took place on April 6, 2014.
On April 8, 2014, the series was extended for the fifth and sixth seasons. The premiere of the fifth season took place on April 12, 2015 [77] , and the sixth on April 24, 2016.
On April 21, 2016, the series was extended for the seventh season [78] [79] . On June 1, 2016, Jack Bender (director of episodes 5 and 6 of the sixth season) reported that the seventh season, unlike the previous ones, consists of 7 episodes instead of 10 [80] [81] . The premiere took place on July 16, 2017.
On July 30, 2016, it was announced that the series would be extended to the last eighth season [82] . On April 14, 2016, David Benioff and Dan Weiss said in an interview with Variety that only 13 episodes were planned for the last two seasons. Since there are 7 episodes in the seventh season, the eighth will consist of 6 episodes [83] [84] , which Benioff and Weiss confirmed in March 2017 [85] . On July 25, 2018, HBO President Casey Bloys announced that the final season would premiere in the first half of 2019 [86] . On November 13, 2018, it was announced on the series’s official Twitter page that the premiere of the 8th season would be in April 2019 [87] .

Most episodes of the first and second seasons had an average duration of 52 minutes, of the third - 56-57 minutes [125] . The first episode of the first season, the last episodes of the remaining seasons, as well as the third, fourth and fifth episodes of the final season are longer than an hour [126] [127] .
The main shooting of the first season took place in Northern Ireland , including Paint Hall Studios in Belfast [128] , as well as in Malta (instead of originally planned Morocco [39] ) in the cities of Mdina and Valletta [129] and on the island of Gozo . Additional filming took place in Carncastle [130] , Shane Castle [131] , Ward Castle [132] , Magheramorne [133] , Tollymore Forest Park [131] in Northern Ireland and atDun CastleinScotland [134] .
The shooting of the southern scenes of the second season instead of Malta took place in the city of Dubrovnik and on the neighboring island of Lokrum . Among the shooting locations in Dubrovnik were the Princely Palace , Sponza Palace and Fort Lovrienac [135] . The scenes on Fist of the First People and Fangs of Frost were shot in November 2011 in Iceland , including on the Snaifälsjökull and Vatnajökull glaciers , as well as in the Höfdabrekkuheidi hills near Vic [136] .
Filming of the third season took place in the same places as in the second, with the addition of several new ones. The role of the gardens of the Royal Harbor was played by the Trsteno Arboretum in Croatia, near Dubrovnik. Episodes in the Gulf of Traders were filmed in Morocco, in particular in the city of Essaouira and in the scenery of Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate . Filming storyline behind the Wall passed in Iceland, including new locations - Lake Myvatn and the cave Groutagyau next to him. The production of three episodes ("Dragon", "Wolf" and "Raven") was conducted in parallel by six crews of 257 participants and 703 members of the crews. One scene (with a live bear nicknamed Little Bar) was filmed in Los Angeles .
Before filming began commentators compared the "Game of Thrones" in the budget with the largest series " Rome " [137] , another super-expensive project HBO and the BBC, who had about 60 million pounds sterling budget [138] . Filming a pilot episode cost HBO between $ 5 and $ 10 million [139] , but was subsequently re-shot. The entire budget of the first season is estimated at 50-60 million US dollars [140] .
The budget of the second season, according to the producers, was 15% higher [141] . The production budget of the most expensive series - Chernovodnaya - amounted to 8 million US dollars. [142]
The cost of each series in the period from 2012 to 2015 increased from 6 to 8 million US dollars [143] [144] . In 2016, the cost of each series of the sixth season reached $ 10 million [145] . In 2017, the cost of each episode of the eighth season reached $ 15 million [146] [147] .
Although the series is American , the vast majority of the actors employed in it are subjects of Great Britain or Ireland . Many characters speak with accents characteristic of different areas of the British Isles [148] . The characters from Westeros speak British English , and their reprimand is often characteristic of the region of England, which geographically correlates with the corresponding region of Westeros. So, Eddard Stark, a native of the North, speaks with an accent characteristic of the north of England, while Southerner Tywin Lannister speaks with an accent typical of the inhabitants of the English south. Actors playing foreign characters speak with “foreign” accents, real or simulated[149] . The inconsistency of this approach has been criticized by British viewers, including professional linguists: in the series, even members of the same family can speak different versions of English. Anthony Grant, professor of historical linguistics from the University of Edgehill , Named shown in the series set a hodgepodge of accents ( Eng. A mish-mash ) and laid the blame on American producers [150] .
The series contains dialogues in artificial languages , foreign to Westeros - Dothraki and various dialects of Valyrian . The HBO channel hired the American linguist David Peterson [151] , who developed a vocabulary, phonetic and grammatical structure for each language [152] .
